No. 21 Lopes drop rain-shortened opener at Hilo
HILO, Hawaii -- Grand Canyon has been soaked in all this Hawaii rain. Thursday it caught up to the No. 21-rankedAntelopes when they lost the first game of a scheduled doubleheader at Hawai'i Hilo, 4-2.
The game was called after five innings. The second game was rescheduled for 1 p.m. Friday in Hilo.
GCU (20-8, 5-6 PacWest) jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the third inning when Tracy Lubken doubled down the left field line and Tana Holtorf singled her home with a base hit up the middle. The Lopes tacked on another run in the fourth when Yasmeen Watkins, Erika Reay and Brittney Wojtowicz each singled, Wojtowicz' hit driving in Watkins to make it 2-0. But the Antelopes stranded two runners to end the inning.
Hilo (9-10, 2-5) answered with two runs in each of the last two innings before the umpires called the game.
Wojtowicz went 2 for 2 with an RBI. Reay (pictured) was 2 for 3. Holtorf was 2 for 3 with an RBI.
Grand Canyon outhit the Vulcans, 9-4.
GCU pitcher Sammi Tiefenthaler allowed three runs on two hits and six walks in the loss. Natasha Dypchey worked the last inning, giving up two hits, a walk and an unearned run.
Hilo's Nicole Alconcel drove in two runs with a double to center for the gamewinner.
