LOS ANGELES -- Against the most storied program in NCAA men's volleyball history, Grand Canyon's first-year program lost 3-0 to UCLA (8-10) at Pauley Pavilion Wednesday.
The Lopes (2-16) lost by set scores of 30-19, 30-25, 30-21.
Freshman Mikel Meador had nine kills, five digs and three block assists. Freshman Taylor Griffin, from Anaheim, Calif., led GCU with 10 kills and also had five kills.
A Meador kill tied the first set 10-10, but the Bruins, ranked No. 11 in the country and winners of 19 national titles, pulled away midway through the game.
GCU did the rallying in the second set, but came up short on the victory. A Patrick Winn (pictured) service ace got the Lopes within 23-22. Brennan Zotovich got a block later in the set to cut the Bruins advantage to 26-24, but a Zotovich kill from setter Chris Bradshaw was the only other point.
The Lopes next three matches will be at home. Ball State is in Phoenix Saturday (7 p.m.) and Sunday (1 p.m.). St. Ambrose comes to town Monday (7 p.m.).
