Lopes fall to Urban Knights
Grand Canyon had all the offense in its favor Sunday afternoon except for one shot.
And it came on a header off a corner kick that proved pivotal in the Antelopes 1-0 loss to Academy of Art.
Audrey Rudolf scored on a header in the 64th minute for the game's only goal in a disappointing loss for the Antelopes, which outshot Academy of Art 22-8 in the non-conference game.
Rudolf's header followed a header by Lauren Johnson.
It was the first time this year Academy of Art (2-8-1) has scored in the second half of a game, and it signalled an end to a four-game losing streak for the Urban Knights.
Grand Canyon (3-7-1) was seeking its first back-to-back wins of the season after beating Notre Dame de Namur a week earlier. The search continues.
GCU made AAU goalkeeper Shelby Magallon save seven shots in the first half. After Angela Russell and Nichole Elias put shots on goal in the first 17 minutes of the second half to bring Magallon's save total to nine, the Urban Knights cashed in two minutes later.
Tessa Chesser (pictured) put a shot on net in the 73rd minute, but Magallon made the save. Kaylen Jackson had another good crack at it in the 87th minute, but the Urban Knights keeper stood her ground, posting her second shutout of the year.
Jackson had four shots on goal for the Antelopes. Elias had three. Russell had two.
GCU goalkeeper Shela Robertson made two saves.
The Antelopes will host Cal State San Bernardino in another non-conference game at 4:30 p.m. Wednesday as part of Student Appreciation day. Students will be allowed to bring their couch to the game, and have a chance to win prizes at halftime of the men's game that follows the women's game.
