They've had to win two types of battles all year, these Antelopes. One, the game itself on the field. Two, overcoming all of the injuries.
Queen's song never seemed so eerily fitting.
Grand Canyon will be without the services of another player when the Antelopes meet Notre Dame de Namur on the road today for the final mainland game of the season. Candice Buckles (pictured) may have a torn ACL after suffering an injury in the Dixie State game Tuesday night in Utah.
So an already depleted team, which took only 14 players and one coach on this two-game road trip, readies forthe Argonauts in another shorthanded situation.
All is not lost, however.
GCU (4-10-1, 3-4 PacWest) beat NDNU (5-8, 3-3) in a 1-0 game in Phoenix on Oct. 5. But it was Buckles' goal that converted the outcome from grudge match draw status to victorious relief.
"I've never been so happy to see the ball hit the back of the net," coach Stevie Gill said afterward.
Indeed Buckles' goal was the lift the Antelopes needed in their season. It restored confidence they could win the one-goal games -- something they found themselves in for four of the next five games. Couple that with their third shutout of the year to give senior goalkeeper Shela Robertson, a fifth-year player at GCU, the league lead in the category, and this season didn't appear so bleak. They found themselves in the thick of the conference race.
Robertson needs two saves to move into third place in GCU career history. She is second in the conference this year with 62, and has 166 in her career. She has a 1.90 goals against average this season.
Now with the thought of another opportunity on hand before they embark on a four-game road trip to two islands in Hawaii to close the season, the Antelopes can't do anything but seize the moment. Notre Dame is coming off a 4-0 win over the same team GCU last shut out. The Argonauts, themselves, had lost two straight 1-nil games around that time. So a battle for conference positioning is at stake before both clubs head to the Pacific.
Notre Dame and Grand Canyon are tied with nine points in league play. The Argos will host league leader Dixie State on Friday to bring themselves even in conference games played with the Lopes.
Needless to say, a win today could be the difference between third and fifth place in the league.
Purple Pride is at stake.
