Lady Lopes begin long home stretch
Keeley Cisneros stretched out behind the goal before Thursday's practice as the Antelopes geared up forSaturday's game. Cisneros (pictured) was tired.
Well, now Grand Canyon women's soccer team can settle in at home for the next month. The Antelopes (1-4) begin a nine-game homestand until Oct. 19 starting with Saturday night's 7 p.m. game against Northwest Nazarene (1-5).
Nazarene is coming off its first win of the season on Wednesday. The Idaho school will also play BYU-Hawaii at GCU 11 a.m. Monday.
Grand Canyon is hoping for a win to send the Antelopes into conference play Tuesday with momentum and confidence.
"That's exactly what we're looking for," GCU coach Stevie Gill said.
The Antelopes have suffered through injuries for the third straight year to start the season. With three games against teams receiving votes in the Top 25 poll, that's not an easy way to start the season. But the Antelopes have opportunities to begin a nice stretch.
"As long as we focus ourselves, we can do well this year," Gill said.
Viviana Zumpano (pictured) scored three goals in the alumni game, and appears ready to go after missing two games for a red card suspension.
"(Angela) Russell and Viviana are starting to show good polish up front," GCU assistant coach Paul Barron said. "They're starting to connect really well."
Jeanne Davis is back from a two-game suspension as well, and freshman Candice Buckles could make her season debut after battling a preseason hamstring injury.
"Spirits are still up," Gill said.
