Antelopes welcome Seasiders for PacWest opener
Vanessa Young was leaving practice Monday after a trip to the trusty trainer's staff when talk of Tuesday's gamepopped up.
The Antelopes (1-4-1) know what they're up against with BYU-Hawaii visiting for the Pacific West Conference opener at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday. BYU-Hawaii (4-1) is coming off a 5-2 win over Northwest Nazarene on Monday. Grand Canyon battled Nazarene to a double overtime scoreless draw on Saturday.
Finding a way to the net becomes GCU's focus.
"We just got to shoot," Young said. "We don't have people shooting, including myself."
Grand Canyon has scored in all but one game this year. They have been outshot 104-83.
"It's all on me now," forward Nichole Elias said. "I have to get the job done."
Forward Viviana Zumpano broke her leg in Saturday's game, leaving the Lopes down a scoring threat. But the return of Kaylen "Action" Jackson should help revitalize the offense. And Young's presence up front will have to be felt more with the speedy Zumpano out of the lineup.
Goalkeeper Shela Robertson, sweeper Tessa Chesser and midfielder Maritza Quinlan (pictured) all were named to the PacWest Weekly Honor Roll Monday, following their defensive performance in the shutout Saturday. It was the Antelopes' first shutout of the year.
