Antelopes seek win over Chaminade
Karley Nelson was in the training room with women's soccer trainer Sam Cervantes Wednesday evening, discussing the importance of getting a win Thursday.
Coach Stevie Gill echoed the sentiments as well.
Grand Canyon (1-5-1. 0-1 PacWest) will be seeking its first win in September and first since beating St. Mary's on Aug. 31 when it hosts Chaminade (1-3, 0-1) at 4:30 p.m. Thursday at GCU Soccer Complex.
"We need to get some confidence," Gill said. "Not just for the girls, but for the Gillster."
The Gillster, a proud Canadian who played professionally for the Toronto Olympians, is in search of his first PacWest win as a head coach.
An improved second half against the conference's top team, BYU-Hawaii, on Tuesday was uplifting for the Antelopes. But Gill wants to see the silly mistakes like giving up a goal in the game's first 13 seconds eliminated.
Cervantes announced a healthier lineup for Thursday's game. Defender Jessica Schartz (pictured) has a chance to play for the first time in three games after battling a knee injury. Kaylen Jackson and Janelle Salazar returned to the field on Tuesday.
The Antelopes have an .096 shot percentage. Their opponents are shooting at a .202 clip.
