Lopes lose pair to No. 18 Dixie State
ST. GEORGE, Utah -- Grand Canyon lost a doubleheader to No. 18 Dixie State, 13-8 and 9-1 Saturday.
The losses prevented GCU from moving into a tie for second place in the conference. Dixie State held onto that spot.
GCU's Yasmeen Watkins belted a grand slam in the third inning of Game 1 to put the Lopes (34-24, 12-9 PacWest) ahead, 5-0. But Dixie State (36-10, 19-5) scored three runs in the bottom half of the inning and two more in the fifth to tie it.
After Grand Canyon tacked on three more runs in the top of the sixth on RBI singles by Tana Holtorf and Randi Johns and a Dixie State throwing error which allowed Tracy Lubken to score, the Red Storm responded with eight runs in the bottom half of the inning to take control.
Watkins went 3 for 4 with four RBI in the 25-hit slugfest between the two teams. Johns was 3 for 4 with two RBI, and Kara Holtorf went 2 for 4.
Johns had a solo home run, her ninth of the season, in the second game. But the Lopes managed just three hits, and Dixie State jumped out early, scoring four runs in the first inning, and never relinquished the lead.
Kelli Bridges, Johns and Watkins accounted for the Lopes' three hits in Game 2. Bridges (pictured) was 1 for 3 in the first game.
The Antelopes play at Notre Dame de Namur on Friday in the final PacWest doubleheader of the season. GCU will also play at Cal State Monterey Bay in a non-conference twin bill next Sunday as part of the three-day road trip to the Bay Area.
