Holtorf, Tiefenthaler homer in GCU loss to WNMU
SILVER CITY, N.M. -- Tana Holtorf went yard for the first time this year. Samantha Tiefenthaler took one deep for the fourth time.
But Grand Canyon committed five errors, and the Antelopes suffered a 4-3 loss at Western New Mexico Tuesday.
"We gave 'em five extra outs," GCU coach Ann Pierson said.
Holtorf went 2 for 4. Tiefenthaler (pictured) was 2 for 3 with two RBI. Holtorf belted her home run to left in the first inning to spot the Antelopes a 1-0 lead. Tiefenthaler led off the second with a long ball to center to extend the Lopes' lead to 2-1.
It was Tiefenthaler's second home run in four days. She has driven in six runs in the last four days in which GCU (36-26) has played four games, all on the road. Tiefenthaler spiked her batting average to .279, nearly 20 percentage points higher than before this four-game stretch began.
But when the Lopes needed the big hit or a couple in a row, they couldn't deliver.
"We just didn't get our bats going," Pierson said.
Western New Mexico scored three unearned runs, cashing in on one in the first when Maricopa, Ariz., native Kortney Smith, who went 2 for 3 with a walk, scored after striking out and then reaching base on an error. The Mustangs added two runs in the fourth when the first two batters reached base on successive errors and later scored.
Tiefenthaler (14-13) took the loss, allowing seven hits, one earned run and a walk. She struck out five batters.
WNMU's Priscilla Garcia picked up the win, improving to 10-14. She allowed seven hits, two earned runs and two walks, while fanning four.
GCU's Erika Reay, Yasmeen Watkins and Tracy Lubken each had one hit in three trips to the plate.
The Antelopes, the NFCA Academic National Champions for three straight years, will conclude the regular season Wednesday with a doubleheader in Silver City before returning home to concentrate on exams. GCU, ranked No. 10 in the West Region, will await the results of the rest of the West Region's schedule to play out over the next week, and will make its case for an at-large berth to the NCAA Division II National Tournament.
