Grand Canyon crowns two champs in Utah

OREM, Utah -- Grand Canyon University's Richard Palencia won the 133-pound title and Victor Carazo claimed the 174 championship Saturday at the Utah Valley Open.
Tony Denegal was second at 133, Stephen Towne placed third at 165 and Daniel Garay was fourth at 174.
Wrestlers from San Jose State, Boise State, Wyoming and Weber State competed at the tournament hosted by Utah Valley University.
"All those schools were there and no one had more than two champs," GCU coach R.C. LaHaye said. "It not only creates a buzz that a young program can compete, but it tells our team that we can wrestle with the best teams."
Palencia (pictured) beat Denegal 11-3 in the championship. Denegal had beaten Blake Mangum in the semifinals, 6-3.
Carazo pinned Menlo College's Hanna Malak in 35 seconds before defeating Michael Cavenaugh by major decision, 14-2, and Utah Valley University's Brad Darrington in another major decision, 14-5, in the championship.
Towne went 3-1 with an 11-1 major decision over Western State College's Chris McWhorter in the third place bout. Garay was 4-2 with three major decisions and a pin over Ben Lynch in 4:21.
Grand Canyon will host New Mexico Highlands and Cal Baptist on Friday beginning at 5 p.m.
"These guys all want to win bad," LaHaye said. "They want to win that first team dual, and they want to be part of the team that wins that first dual."
