Grand Canyon University wrestling coach R.C. LaHaye announced the signing of 12 student-athletes to this year's recruiting class.
Junior college transfer Victor Carazo (174 pounds) headlines the list. Carazo went 31-1, winning a California Athletic Community College state title in 2007. He is a former state finalist in California.
"Victor is extremely athletic, and has a ton of potential," LaHaye said. "We are excited to have him on board here at GCU."
The Antelopes also added two-time Arizona state champion Richard Palencia (133) as well as former state champ David Islas (125). Palencia is a Maryvale High School product, and Islas is from Pueblo High and Pima Community College.
"Richard and David ... all have a ton of potential," LaHaye said. "We want to keep Arizona's best wrestlers here at home, and that's exactly what these guys are."
The addition of former state runner-ups Austin Morre (141), Anthony Vidales (133), Marcos Escalante (197) and Brian Cooper (184) gives GCU more homegrown talent. The 'Lopes also brought in Jacob Dodge (149), Ramiro Quesada (174), Kevin Treftz (184), Dan Aurel (174) and Carlos Ortiz (285).
GCU will open the season Oct. 25 at the Cal Baptist Open before hosting the Purple & Black Dual for inter-squad wrestle-offs Nov. 6 at 7 p.m. The Antelopes plan to host five events at GCU this season.
