4 Lopes named to all-conference team
Senior defender/midfielder Tessa Chesser (Phoenix/Shadow Mountain HS) was named first team All-Pacific West Conference. She is one of four Grand Canyon University women's soccer players who received all-conference honors.
Chesser, a repeat first team choice, capped her Antelopes career on a high note in her final week, scoring the gamewinning goal and first of her career in a big 1-0 win at the University of Hawai'i at Hilo to help springboard GCU to a 2-2 road trip to close the season.
Chesser had one goal and one assist, starting in all 18 games she played.
"Overall, it was a great experience," Chesser said. "It was all done with hard work, and if it wasn't for all the time and effort I put into the program, that outcome wouldn't have been successful."
Chesser played in 73 games in her four-year career.
"She left everything on the field every game," Grand Canyon assistant coach Paul Baron said. "She willed us to win at times."
Junior sweeper Jessica Schartz (Phoenix/Paradise Valley CC) was named second team all-conference. Schartz (pictured left) helped key five shutouts this season, her first as an Antelope.
She had one assist, starting in all 17 games she played.
"She reads the game very well," Baron said.
Senior goalkeeper Shela Robertson (Blaine, Wash./Blaine HS) and junior forward Kaylen Jackson (Tucson/Ampitheater HS) were honorable mention selections.
Robertson (pictured right) led the PacWest in shutouts this year with five. She had a 6-10-1 record, 1.76 goals against average and .735 saves percentage, stopping 86 shots. Her five shutouts rank second in GCU season history. Her eight career shutouts are second all-time at the school.
"Shela got stronger," Baron said. "As her confidence grew, she got better."
Robertson, who began her career at GCU in 2004 but was granted an additional year for a medical redshirt, had a 13-23-2 career record, 1.84 GAA and stopped 190 shots in her 47 games in net. Her goals against average ranks second in school history, and her total saves stands third.
She was an honorable mention choice in 2006 as well.
Jackson led the team in scoring with seven goals and three assists for 17 points. A junior college transfer, Jackson had two gamewinning goals.
"She wants more," Baron said. "She was not satisfied with how she did."
