Grand Canyon Defeats No. 2-Ranked Team in the Nation, RMAC Rival

The Grand Canyon University wrestling team won two very big duals tonight at Antelope Gymnasium in Phoenix. The first was over California Baptist University, the No. 2-ranked NAIA team in the nation, and the second was against Colorado State University-Pueblo, a Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference rival and a team that beat the No. 10-ranked team in NCAA Division II, Adams State, last week.

The Antelopes got key victories from redshirt senior Daniel Garay (Los Angeles, CA/Mount Sac College) and sophomore Kevin Treftz (Sierra Vista, AZ/Buena), as well as a key fall by freshman Kyle Wilson (Wasilla, AK/Colony HS) to get the win over Cal Baptist.

"Garay looked very tough and is wrestling well, going 2-0," GCU head coach R.C. LaHaye said.

GCU's three top wrestlers, junior Todd Wilcox (Sacramento, CA/Sierra College), redshirt senior Stephen Towne (Phoenix, AZ/Menlo College) and redshirt sophomore Victor Carazo (Modesto, CA/Modesto Junior College), all went 2-0 on the day.

"These were great wins overall for GCU wrestling," LaHaye said.

133 pounds --Wilcox won 6-3 decision over Chancey Phillipps

141 pounds -- Wilson won (fall) over J. Rojas

149 pounds -- Redshirt junior Daniel Rubio (Phoenix, AZ/Phoenix College) lost (technical fall) to I. Milan

157 pounds -- Towne won 5-3 decision over N. Cataline

165 pounds -- Carazo won 3-1 decision over P. Browne

174 pounds -- Garay won 6-2 decision over Knoland

184 pounds -- Junior Ryan Becerra (Gilbert, AZ/Cal State Bakersfield) lost decision to E. Fracois

197 pounds -- Treftz won 9-4 decision over M. Grijalba
