Second-Half Flurry Leads GCU to Comeback Win
California State University Dominguez Hills (CSUDH) senior midfielder Makensie Pedrotti scored two quick goals early in the first half, but Grand Canyon University tallied three goals in the second half -- including one 53 seconds into the half -- to defeat the Toros, 3-2, Saturday night at the GCU Soccer Field.
Junior midfielder Kelcee Newell (Tucson, AZ/Sahuaro) had an unassisted goal at the 45:53 mark of the second half, senior midfielder/forward Kaylen Jackson (No. 5, pictured; Tucson, AZ/Amphitheater) had an unassisted goal at 51:27 and junior forward Kayla Poe (Mesa, AZ/Dobson) scored on a header on an assist from senior defender Jessica Schartz (Glendale, AZ/Paradise Valley) at 80:21 for the Antelopes (1-0). CSUDH (0-2) had only two shots in the second half and nine for the game, compared to eight and 15 for GCU.
A crowd of about 300 braved the 100-plus-degree temperatures to witness the first athletic event of the 2009-10 school year at GCU. CSUDH played a total of 19 players, while the Antelopes played 13.
