Freshman setter Kristen Preach, who sat out two seasons due to injury, had 23 assists in her first GCU match. The Lopes won by set scores of 25-15, 25-23, 25-23.
GCU (1-0) will take on Fort Lewis Friday at noon and host Colorado Mines at 6:30 p.m.
A Hiller kill, on an assist from senior Whitney Estes, ended the match.
GCU scored the first two points of the match and led by as much as 19-5 in the first set. Senior outside hitter Dana Edington (pictured) broke a second-set 6-6 tie with a kill. It started a 4-0 run. Sophomore Laurann Durbin scored the last two points on service aces.
Though Mesa State got within one, 23-22, GCU never trailed after the Edington spike.
In the third set, GCU trailed 22-21, but a Hiller kill, a Skadeland-Hiller block and Estes kill, gave GCU a 24-22 advantage.
Hiller had a .308 attack percentage and four block assists. Skadeland hit .267 with six kills. Durbin and Edington each had 11 digs.
