Grand Canyon knows this much: the Antelopes are definitely in for Big Monday.
And not just because fans will receive free popcorn.
GCU (13-11, 5-5 PacWest) hosts No. 3 BYU-Hawaii (20-1, 10-0) at 7:30 p.m. Monday in the final home game of the season. The game can be seen on B2 Networks by visiting http://b2tv.com/partner_members.asp?id=78&s=2322&stype=Sports%20Basketball%20Men%27s.
The Antelopes upset BYU-Hawaii, which is on a 17-game winning streak, last year in Antelope Gym when the Seasiders were ranked No. 9 in the nation. Grand Canyon has had great success against BYU-Hawaii in Phoenix.
"They are the best team I've seen all year," GCU coach Dan Nichols said, reflecting on a loss to the Seasiders earlier this month in Laie, Hawaii.
The Seasiders clinched the PacWest title, and will return to the NCAA Division II National Tournament this year. A Grand Canyon upset could mean the Seasiders end up playing in the NCAA West Regional in Carson, Calif., instead of hosting the eight-team regional.
GCU is in search of its first four-game win streak of the season. The Antelopes have won three straight games on two occasions this year.
Seniors Milee Karre (pictured main page), Brandon Dempster, Shansan Chambers (pictured right) and Engen Nurumbi will suit up for the final time in Antelope purple and white in Antelope Gym. Dempster, who checked himself into the hospital earlier this week, may not play. He is hoping to finish his career on the road at Dixie State next weekend.
Grand Canyon lost by 20 to BYU-Hawaii in the season's first meeting. The Antelopes held center Lucas Alves to six points under his average, and curbed him to just three rebounds. BYU point guard Virgil Buensuceso, a Bob Cousy award finalist, had four turnovers in that game. He leads the league in steals at 2.24 per game.
Karre leads the conference in assist-to-turnover ratio at 3.67 per game. He is second in the league in free throw shooting at .855, two one-thousandeths behind the leader. Nurumbi is the PacWest's leader in total blocks at 32. He trails Alves in blocks per game by five one-hundredths for the PacWest league.
"Our guys need no motivation," Nichols said.
Game on.
