Seattle Pacific University is a men's soccer powerhouse, winning five NCAA Division II national championships since 1978. It's also becoming a force in men's basketball. The sixth-ranked Falcons entered tonight's game against Grand Canyon University seeking to enter the Christmas break with a perfect record.
"We've got ourselves in a pretty special situation," first-year SPU head coach Ryan Looney said. "This is my sixth year being a head coach and none of my teams have ever been undefeated at Christmas. We're just going to try to stay focused and try to give each other the best Christmas present possible."
GCU gave Seattle Pacific all it could handle, but in the end the Falcons -- a team with four returning starters and 12 returning lettermen that posted a 19-10 record and advanced to the second round of the NCAA Division II Tournament last season -- defeated the 'Lopes, 70-57, at Royal Brougham Pavilion on the Seattle Pacific campus.
Merry Christmas.
