They'll be home for Christmas.
The Grand Canyon University men's basketball team, which has played 12 of its first 15 games on the road, will be back in Phoenix late tomorrow morning. It will be a happy homecoming for the 'Lopes, not only because they'll finally be able to spend some time with their families and friends and sleep in their own beds, but also because they defeated Cal State Los Angeles, 47-44, tonight at the Eagles' Nest in Los Angeles.
The 'Lopes again were minus two starters, sophomore forward Justin Wesolowski (Mesa, AZ/Mountain View) and sophomore guard Nick Witherill (Phoenix, AZ/Highland). Wesolowski has an injured left calf suffered in the home win over Saint Martin's on Dec. 4 and Witherill has a strained back so severe that he did not travel with the team to Seattle last Friday or make it over to Los Angeles today.
Starting in their place were junior forward Rony Tchatchoua (pictured, Little Rock, AR/Christian) and freshman guard Steven Morin (Scottsdale, AZ/Saguaro).
