GCU holds on to win 5-setter over BYU-Hawaii

Grand Canyon won the first two sets, but had to rally late for a 3-2 Pacific West Conference match victory over BYU-Hawaii at Antelope Gymnasium Saturday.

GCU won by set scores of 25-21, 25-18, 22-25, 15-25, 15-13.

Senior Whitney Estes (Gardnerville, Nev./Douglas) had 14 kills and a .312 attack percentage. She added four block assists.

Junior Megan Toth (Phoenix, Ariz./Arcadia) added 11 kills, 13 digs, two solo blocks, a block assist and a service ace.

Freshmen middle hitters Katie Peterson (pictured, Glendale, Ariz./Mountain Ridge) and Shelby Taylor (Phoenix, Ariz./Christian) combined for 14 kills, and 11 block assists. Peterson had five kills and seven assists. Taylor had nine and four.

GCU freshman setter Kristen Preach (Phoenix, Ariz./Xavier Prep) had 43 assists, four kills, five digs and five block assists. Sophomore libero Laurann Durbin (Phoenix, Ariz./Sunnyslope) had 29 digs and two service aces. Freshman Erica Ehlo (Spokane, Wash./Lewis and Clark) had seven kills, three block assists and four digs.

In the fifth set, GCU (10-7, 1-5) scored seven of the first nine points before BYU-Hawaii (6-9, 3-3) came back to tie the set 12-12. An Estes kill gave GCU a 14-12 lead and a block by Peterson and Ehlo finished off the match.
