W Soccer 8-30-08 Antelopes suffer drubbing in Pomona POMONA, Calif. -- The Antelopes have upgraded offensively. That is not questioned. But where Grand Canyon women's soccer team needs a gutcheck is on the defensive end after suffering a 7-2 loss to host Cal Poly Pomona Saturday. It was the 'Lopes second loss of the season, entering Sunday night's 7 p.m. home opener against St. Mary's (Texas) University at GCU Soccer Complex. GCU allowed three goals in the first half and four more in the second. Jessica Schartz, a defender by trade, played the first 45 minutes in net before giving way to Shela Robertson in the second half. Schartz had one save. Newcomer Nichole Elias scored on an assist from Kaylen Jackson in the first half. But before the Antelopes could mount a comeback, Poly Pomona (1-0) scored three goals in a 10-minute span in the second half to blow the game open. Jennifer Lu and Britany Garret each scored two goals for the Broncos. Andrea Salerno had two assists for Pomona. Whitney Reichert, who missed last year with an injury, scored on an assist from Erinn Juliano for the Antelopes in the 83rd minute. Pomona outshot GCU 10-2 in the second half. |
