Grand Canyon University produced its biggest win since the season opener. The Antelopes knocked off No. 2 Sonoma State University 5-4 in the first game of a doubleheader Saturday in Rohnert Park, Calif.
GCU beat then-No. 4 Mesa State College 11-10 in dramatic, come-from-behind fashion to open the season.
Ryan Hoffner went 7 1/3 innings, allowing two runs on four hits and one walk to pick up the win. Nick Lowery tossed an inning of shutout relief to earn the save.
GCU lost the second game 9-1.
Grand Canyon (9-28) scored twice in the first inning on an RBI single by Trevor Vega and an RBI groundout by Matt Fox. After Sonoma State picked up one of its own in the bottom half of the inning, the Antelopes extended their lead to 4-1 when Tyler Bair ripped a two-out, two-run double.
Austin Stockfisch's RBI double made it 5-1 in the top of the eighth. SSU (34-5) added a run in the eighth and two more in the ninth to pull within one, but Lowery (pictured) got an inning-ending double play to end the Seawolves' threat.
