GCU sweeps Chaminade, pounds 33 hits
The Antelopes packaged it all together on Tuesday: lively bats, pitching and confidence. The end result was a sweep.
Grand Canyon brandished its bats, and its pitching silenced Chaminade in a 7-3 and 11-0 doubleheader sweep. All on a day when ASA National Hall of Famers Sis King and Billie Harris were honored at Stapleton-Pierson Stadium.
"It feels good to win, and once you feel it, you crave it," GCU first baseman Randi Johns said.
Johns went 3 for 3, belting her fourth home run of the year and driving in three runs in the opener. She was 1 for 3 with an RBI in the second game.
Grand Canyon (12-13-1, 7-5 PacWest) pounded 16 hits in Game 1 and 17 more in Game 2. Yasmeen Watkins was 2 for 4 with two RBI in the opener and 3 for 4 with two RBI in the second game. Tana Holtorf was 1 for 3 with an RBI in the first game and 3 for 5 with two doubles and two RBI in the second.
Strohm Fouty went 2 for 5 in Game 1 and 3 for 5 in Game 2. Sydney Reyes was 2 for 4 with an RBI in both games. Christine Medrano (pictured) went 2 for 4 in the first game and 2 for 3 with a double in the nightcap.
GCU starter Megan Niver worked all seven innings in the opener, allowing six hits, three runs, two earned, two walks and struck out three to earn her sixth win of the season. Michelle Farrell went the distance in the second game, allowing five hits, no walks and struck out five to record her second shutout of the season.
In the opener, Grand Canyon scored three runs in the fourth inning to take a four-run lead. In the second game, the 'Lopes jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the third and extended it to 6-0 in their next at-bat.
"When we get a cushion like that, it's much easier for our pitchers to settle in," Johns said. "If our offense attacks then our pitching's gonna attack."
GCU leaves Thursday to compete in the highly-regarded Cal State Stanislaus Mizuno Tournament of Champions beginning Friday in Turlock, Calif.
"We're trying not to look too far ahead," Johns said. "Postseason's kind of a coin flip right now. We're trying to win one inning at a time. We know we have to win at this tournament. That's what we have to do to get to the postseason."
