It shouldn't take much to get Grand Canyon motivated for Tuesday's home game against Western New Mexico.
Considering the Antelopes are 2-1 with their only loss coming at WNMU, the motivation part of preparation will be easy.
"It's all we've been talking about," said sophomore guard Marnee Overton.
One of the things the team has talked about is getting off to a better start. At WNMU, the Lopes dug a big first-half hole -- trailing by 11 after shooting 23.9 percent.
GCU took a second-half lead and eventually lost on a shot with two seconds left in regulation, but they could easily look back and think things could have been a lot better with a more productive first 20 minutes.
"We've played some good basketball. We've just had that one bad half," said head coach Trent May. "We're continuing to work on our identity. We have to do some things better and crisper, but this time of year, who doesn't?"
Both teams should come in with confidence. WNMU is 2-0, while GCU has won two straight since its loss in Silver City, N.M.
"We need to start it early rather than late," said GCU senior Jacque Stevens. "We have all the potential to do that."
The game will be Grand Canyon's last home game until a Jan. 9 PacWest battle with Chaminade. The team will play nine times before then, starting with the Regis University Tournament Dec. 5-6.
