OK, OK, yes what a difference a day makes.
Grand Canyon women's basketball team made a complete turnaround Saturday, following a humbling loss on Friday to thump Western New Mexico 77-54 in the final game of the Grand Canyon Classic.
GCU hit 15 of 30 shots in the second half, and had four players reach double figures in a convincing win over a team it will see again on the road Tuesday. The Antelopes (2-2) cut their turnovers nearly in half for Friday's loss to Fort Lewis College.
Unbeaten and 10th-ranked UC San Diego went 2-0 in the Classic after beating Fort Lewis 76-64 in Saturday's first game.
"I think we realized we could've done a lot better in the other games, and we brought that into this game," GCU junior forward Jacque Stevens said, following a 15-point, five-rebound, two-steal effort, despite playing in foul trouble. "It's just an awesome start to our season, and it shows in the work we've put in this year."
Grand Canyon's Rosalyn Nelson scored 21 points, nine rebounds, four steals and three steals, and Samantha Murphy had 13 points, four assists and two steals. Sara Dalgliesh had 10 points and six boards.
Kristyn Flanagan had 11 points and six rebounds, and Christa Kennedy had 10 points and six boards. Jocelyn Chavez scored 10 points for WNMU (0-4).
"We were minus one of our starters tonight, so we were a little bit nervous," Antelopes coach Trent May said, who was pleased with his team's ability to respond to a defense. "We feel like we got a little bit of success tonight, and success breeds success."
