Richard Davis scores 27 for the ‘Lopes
Thursday, 1/18/07 (Phoenix, AZ) -- Vince Alverado hit a driving layin with :01.1 remaining in regulation to lift the University of Hawaii-Hilo to a thrilling 91-89 victory over Grand Canyon University tonight at Antelope Gymnasium. Alverado finished with a game high 34 points, mostly from long range in the second half.
Grand Canyon rallied from an 82-78 deficit to tie the game at 89-89 on Rich Davis' drive to the basket with 05.2 remaining. UH-Hilos' Travis Sobers scored 25 points for the night. Samuel Wilhoite added 18. Davis ended with 29 points to lead Grand Canyon (8-6, 3-2). Rudy Bogan had 19 for GCU. Jason Stromvall had 11 points and Bryan Lee 10 for GCU.
The second half was a shoot-out with Hilo outscoring Canyon 56-53. Davis and Alverado squared off in a three-point shootout in the second half with GCU's Davis hitting five from long range as Alverado answered each one and totaled six threes for the half.
Grand Canyon is back in action in Pacific West Conference play hosting Chaminade University of Honolulu in a 2:30 PM start on Saturday afternoon.
