PHOENIX — Grand Canyon University (6-8) broke their four game losing streak as they split a double header with #17 ranked Western Oregon (4-3) on Saturday afternoon at Brazell Stadium.
The Lopes jumped out to a 4-0 lead during the first game behind a solo home run by Jacob Hanna and some timely hitting by Cody Johns, Brian Smith and a RBI single by Brad Western.
The Wolves jumped back taking the lead from GCU during a five run 7 th inning capped by a 2 run double by Travis Coursey giving Western Oregon the 5-4 lead. WOU put two more runs on in the 8 th inning staking themselves to a 9-4 lead.
In the home half of the 8 th inning the Lopes came fighting back scoring 5 runs on 6 hits with Hanna driving in the go ahead run with a bounding single through the 5-6 hole. Craig Daniel later scored on an attempted pick off to first base giving the Lopes the 9-7 lead. Matt Michael came on in the 9 th inning tossing a perfect final frame striking out the side to pick up the 9-7 win and his 4 th save of the season.
Game two the Lopes jumped out 1-0 only to see the Wolves score 6 unanswered runs on the way to a 10-3 victory during the 7 th inning affair. Coursey went 4 for 4 leading the way with 3 RBI and 2 runs scored. Matt Skundrick and Boo Christianson each added two hits to pace the victory. Wolves starter Ben Shivers picked up the win as he went 5.0 innings giving up 2 runs (1 earned) while scattering 6 hits.
Smith and Hanna each collected 2 hits for the Lopes in the losing cause. Lopes starter Josiah Ziegler was roughed for 9 hits and 6 runs (4 earned) while striking out 5.
These teams conclude the series tomorrow at Brazell Stadium. First pitch is set for noon.
