PHOENIX — CS Dominguez Hills (5-6) shut down the Grand Canyon University (5-5) bats as they swept a double header at Brazell Stadium on Saturday afternoon.
Jason Garcia tossed a complete game shutout yielding one hit as CS Dominguez Hills topped GCU 5-0 in game one. Matt Henne recorded a single in the first inning for the lone GCU hit. Garcia walked one and struck out five en route to his first victory of the season. Jason Klug went 2 for 4 with a home run to pace the Toros win. Both Craig Daniel and Giancarlo Silvestri had their 8 game hitting streaks snapped in the loss while Lopes starter Ben Belanger lasted only 1.1 innings while giving up 5 runs (2 earned) in the loss.
In game two it was more of the same as the Toros pounded out 12 hits in seven innings for the 9-3 victory over the Lopes. Matthew Hopps pitched a complete game striking out seven. GCU ruined the shut out in the final inning when Daniel clubbed his first home run of the season, a 3-run shot to left.
Klug went 3 for 3 with 3 runs scored and his second home run of the day to pace the Toros to victory. Patrick Lawler yielded 10 hits and 7 runs (6 earned) as he picked up his second loss of the season to fall to (0-2) for the Lopes.
These two teams conclude the four game series tomorrow at Brazell Stadium. First pitch is noon.
