Five Players Score in Double Figures
Phoenix, AZ—Grand Canyon University (3-2) had five players score in double figures as they defeated Western New Mexico 79-63 this evening in the Antelope Gymnasium. The 'Lopes were looking to have a better performance the second time around as the Mustangs beat Grand Canyon in their season opener in Silver City. The 'Lopes were led by Rudy Bogan (Jr/Glendale, AZ/South Mountain CC) and Richard Davis (Sr/Glendale, AZ/Glendale CC) with 17 points each.
The 'Lopes jumped out to a 19-10 lead with ten minutes remaining, but then the Mustangs responded with an 11-6 run over the next five minutes to close the gap 25-21. Grand Canyon closed out the half scoring 11 consecutive points and only allowed the Mustangs to score a single point in the closing seconds off of a free throw by Casey Crevelone. With the Mustangs shooting only 33.3 percent from the field, the 'Lopes went into the half up 32-22. In the second half, Western New Mexico shook out of their shooting slump and cut the lead to five points with 12:52 left, 45-40, but the 'Lopes would strike again as Davis hit back-to-back three pointers to add to their lead. The Mustangs never came closer than seven points after that even though they shot 55.2 percent from the field in the half. The 'Lopes shot 47.2 percent from the field and out-rebound Western New Mexico 44-22 in the win.
Jason Stromvall (Sr/Puyallup, WA/Pierce College) had a double-double with 14 points and 10 rebounds and contributed six assists. Bryan Lee (Sr/Antioch, CA/Deer Valley HS) added 13 points and 8 rebounds while Andray Glenn (So/Modesto, CA/Modesto Christian) chipped in 10 off the bench.
The Mustangs were led by Crevelone with a game high 19 points while Jason Jackson and DJ Nicholas added 14 and 12 points respectively.
The 'Lopes are back in action Saturday December 9, when they travel to Dallas, Texas to face Dallas Baptist University. Tip is scheduled for 7:00 PM.
