Bill Curtis (Grand Rapids, Ml/Forest Hills Northern HS) pitched his first complete game of the season, leading Grand Canyon to a 6-5 victory over Southern Utah, salvaging a split in Game 2 of a doubleheader at Brazell Stadium on Saturday.
Southern Utah (7-10) won the weekend series, 3-2, as the two teams split a doubleheader for the second consecutive day.
With the score tied at 2-2 in the second, Canyon (12-7) score three runs, two of them coming on run-scoring singles by
Buddy Critchett (Phoenix/Scottsdale CC) and
Blake Woods (Chandler/Chandler HS). Woods went 2 for 3 for the game and hit .529 (9 for 17, 8 RBI) for the series.
The Thunderbirds battled back to tie the score with two in the third and one more in the fourth. Canyon took the lead for good in its half of the fourth on a run-scoring single by
Brian Sellier (Phoenix/Mountain Pointe HS) and added another on a sacrifice fly by
Jon Hamel (Scottsdale/Horizon HS).
Southern Utah added one in the fifth but was retired in order by Curtis (2-1) over the final two innings. The Thunderbirds' Nick Roberts (3-2) also threw a complete game but was tagged with the loss.
In Game 1, D.J. Penick went 3 for 5 and drove in four runs, leading Southern Utah to an 11-5 victory. Penick had a run-scoring single as part of a four-run third and a two-run single during the Thunderbirds' five-run sixth.
Cody Ransom (Chander/Chandler HS) had a three-run homer for Canyon, his third of the season, in the third to bring the 'Lopes closer.
Southern Utah's Scott Harrison (2-3) won, while Canyon's
Mike Torres (Tucson/Salpointe Catholic HS) fell to 0-1 on the season.
Canyon begins Western Athletic Conference play at home against Air Force next Friday at 3p.m.
