In Dr. Dave Brazell's final season at the helm of the Grand Canyon baseball program, the 'Lopes went 56-14-2 on their way to an NAIA National title. GCU captured the title with a 10-inning 5-4 win over Lewis University (IL) at Greer Stadium in Nashville, TN. The 'Lopes qualified for the 10-team tournament as an "at large" team after losing in teh Area II final. Canyon had a solid 3.78 ERA for the season and a .323 batting average. The teams' 75 total home runs in 1980 set a new school record. Pitcher Jim Gerlach won Tournament MVP honors as GCU had a staff ERA of 1.15 in the NAIA College World Series. Thirdbaseman Brian Anderson won the "Coaches Hustle Award."
