| "The SEC is really who sets the standard for facilities ... I'm thinking, did we get an SEC stadium here in the Valley? It's just really gorgeous." Mike Rooney, ESPN Analyst "What an outstanding new venue here at GCU Baseball. Simply first class." Kendall Rogers, D1Baseball.com "A ballpark that compares favorably to other ballparks in the spring-training-heavy Phoenix area, as well as other upper-level NCAA ballparks." Brazell Field at GCU Ballpark stands as one of the West’s premier college baseball venues, pairing the historic foundation of Grand Canyon baseball with a first-class modern gameday experience.
With a new stadium constructed to open for the 2018 season in the most significant renovation in facility history, the ballpark preserved the original field layout first designed by Dr. Dave Brazell in 1962 while transforming everything around it into a premier Division I venue. The result is a stadium environment that blends tradition, player development and fan experience at the highest level.
The facility features purple chairback seating, a right-field turf berm, entertainment deck, upper-level concourse, multi-room press box, team shop, ticket office, wireless internet and classroom space. Adjacent covered batting cages, an artificial turf practice field and the Tim Salmon Clubhouse create a complete year-round development environment for the Lopes.
Since its debut, the ballpark has continued to evolve with the addition of a right-center field video board in 2022 and an upgraded left-field scoreboard in 2023, further elevating one of college baseball’s premier atmospheres in the West.
While the surrounding venue has undergone dramatic transformation over the decades, the playing surface itself remains faithful to Brazell’s original vision on the west end of campus. What began with wooden bleachers and chain-link fencing has grown into one of the region’s most recognizable college baseball settings.
The legacy of the facility is inseparable from its namesake. Brazell founded Grand Canyon baseball in 1953 and led the program for 28 seasons, compiling a 728-385-8 record while building the Lopes into a national small-college power. A two-time NAIA Coach of the Year, he guided the program to its first NAIA national championship in 1980, cementing his place as one of the foundational figures in Grand Canyon athletics.
Even during his final months, Brazell made frequent visits to watch the new ballpark rise around the field he first envisioned. Today, his legacy lives on every time the Lopes take the field at the stadium that continues to bear both his name and his vision.
