Todd Lee enters his fifth season as associate head coach with the men's basketball team at Grand Canyon in 2017-18. Lee is heavily involved in all aspects of the GCU men's basketball operations. Additionally, he runs all of the Lopes' offseason men's basketball camps during the summer that host more than 1,000 campers.
During the past four years at GCU while the Lopes transitioned fully into Division I status, Lee helped coach Dan Majerle guide the Lopes to four of top-three finishes in the Western Athletic Conference (WAC), including two second-place finishes. The Lopes led the league in scoring in 2015 and finished 0.1 points out of the league lead for scoring average.
Lee came to Phoenix in 2012 following eight seasons as Kentucky Wesleyan's head coach, finishing his final campaign with the Panthers with a 20-8 record. The team tied its best start under Lee for the second straight season at 14-0 as it climbed to No. 3 in the national rankings. From 2006 to 2013, Lee's teams produced a 134-48 record for an average of 22.3 wins and a 73.6 winning percentage. During Lee’s tenure, the Panthers earned four top 25 final rankings plus six straight trips to the Great Lakes Valley Conference Tournament and five to the NCAA Midwest Regional.
Lee was just the fourth coach in Panther history to take a Panther squad to five NCAA tournaments. In 2011-12, he guided KWC to their highest weekly ranking in nine seasons at No. 1 as they achieved their third-best start in history at 14-0. The Panthers finished No. 18 in the final poll and fifth in NCAA total attendance at 47,145 and fifth in average attendance with 2,619 per game. For these accomplishments, Lee was one of the 10 finalists for the prestigious 2012 Clarence 'Big House' Gaines Division II National Coach of the Year Award by CollegeInsider.com.
Lee produced his finest season in 2009-10, as the 29-5 record was the most wins in his tenure and the eighth best in school history. He guided the Panthers to a GLVC best record 16-2 to win the regular-season title and was named 2010 NABC Midwest Region Coach of the Year.
In 2009, Lee led the squad to its national record-breaking 35th trip to the NCAA tournament with a 19-9 record, a third-place finish in the GLVC East Division at 11-7 and the league tournament. Additionally, he garnered 2008 GLVC Coach-of-the-Year accolades.
Lee's coaching career spans nearly 30 seasons at Division I (14), Division II (11), in the pros (2) and at the junior college level (2). He joined Kentucky Wesleyan after spending eight seasons as an assistant coach at UC-Irvine, his last four as associate head coach, and his 11th overall working with head coach Pat Douglass.
A native of Huron, S.D., Lee also served three years on Douglass’ staff at Division II powerhouse CSU Bakersfield. The Roadrunners compiled a 75-16 record, made three trips to the NCAA tourney, won two West Region titles en route to the Elite Eight and captured the 1997 NCAA Division II national championship with a 29-4 record.
During his tenure at UC Irvine, the Anteaters won 122 games including 93 in his last five seasons. They posted three consecutive 20-win seasons (2001, 2002 and 2003), won two consecutive regular-season Big West Conference titles (2001 and 2002, the school’s first) and twice secured spots in the National Invitation Tournament in 2001 and 2002.
Lee also served an assistant coach for two seasons with the Rapid City (S.D.) Thrillers of the Continental Basketball Association. During those two years, the Thrillers posted the CBA’s top records of 44-12 in 1993 and 37-19 in 1994 under former head coach of the NBA’s Sacramento Kings and Golden State Warriors Eric Musselman.
Prior to coaching in the CBA, Lee was an assistant at San Diego (1989-92) under Hank Egan, a former assistant for the NBA's San Antonio Spurs, Golden State Warriors and the Cleveland Cavaliers.
Lee, who began his coaching career as an assistant at Southwestern Junior College in Chula Vista, Calif., earned his master’s degree in education from Azusa Pacific in 2003. He received his bachelor’s degree from South Dakota in1986.
Lee and his wife, Kim, a native of Evansville, Ind., have three sons, Carson, Jackson and Peyton.
