The Lute Olson coaching tree has a sturdy branch at GCU in Matt Brase, who joined the program as a graduate assistant coach for the 2009-10 season. Brase, who is Olson’s grandson, spent the 2008-09 season as an assistant coach at the University of Arizona under Russ Pennell. He was the program’s administrative assistant and video coordinator for two seasons previously.
Brase played for his legendary grandfather as a walk-on at the U of A in 2003-04 and 2004-05. Those two Wildcat teams went 50-17 overall and 26-10 in the Pac-10 Conference, reaching the NCAA tournament Elite Eight in 2005 before a heartbreaking overtime loss to Illinois. A graduate of Catalina Foothills High School in Tucson, Brase played at Central Arizona College in Coolidge before transferring to the U of A. He has a degree in business management from the U of A and worked for Hamilton Aerospace Technologies after graduation.
Brase’s father, Jon, a Tucson dentist, played baseball at Iowa, and his sister Julie played for the U of A women’s basketball team before coaching at Loyola Marymount and with the WNBA’s Phoenix Mercury. His mother, Jody, Lute Olson’s daughter, is the athletic director at Catalina Foothills High School.
