Howard Mansfield was the first men's basketball coach for a newly established Grand Canyon College. Mansfield was both the athletic director and men's basketball coach for the school, then based in Prescott.
After a winless first season, Mansfield led Grand Canyon to its first ever victory: a 61-46 defeat of Arizona State's freshman team in Prescott on Jan. 12, 1951.
Prior to Grand Canyon, Mansfield was the head basketball coach and an assistant football coach at Union University in Jackson, Tennessee, for three years.
