Dan Nichols served one season as Grand Canyon's head men's basketball coach in 2008-09 after being named the program's 11th head coach on July 18, 2008.
He came to GCU after spending seven seasons as head coach at South Mountain Community College in Phoenix. Nichols teams went 127-89 at South Mountain, winning three Arizona Community College Athletic Association championships and two region titles.
His 2007-08 SMCC team was ranked No. 5 in the National Junior College Athletic Association Division II polls. The Cougars finished seventh at the NJCAA National Championships.
In 2007-08, Nichols’ SMCC team went 25-8 overall, 16-6 in the ACCAC. SMCC went 2-1 at the national tournament. Nichols was named the ACCAC Coach of the Year and the NJCAA District 1 Coach of the Year in 2007-08.
Nichols coached five junior college All-Americans. He coached former Grand Canyon University players Noe Alonzo and Rudy Bogan at SMCC.
In 1999-00, Nichols was an assistant at Cal Baptist University, which went 14-14. From 1995-2001, he coached at Maryvale and Central High Schools in Phoenix, compiling a 66-52 record. His teams made three region tournament appearances and qualified for the state tournament once.
Nichols also worked for Quantitative Scouting from 1999-01, providing offensive analysis and scouting services for NBA teams.
He earned his bachelor’s degree in Physical Education from Arizona State University in 1985. Nichols obtained his master’s degree in Counselling & Human Relations from Northern Arizona University in 2000.
