Casey Shaw is in his seventh season on the Grand Canyon men's basketball staff in 2026-27 and serves as associate head coach.
Shaw has been alongside head coach Bryce Drew for the entirety of Drew's GCU tenure, helping establish the Lopes as a consistent NCAA Tournament program. During their first six seasons together at GCU, the Lopes made four NCAA Tournament appearances, won four WAC Tournament championships and captured two WAC regular-season titles.
The run included the best season in GCU's Division I history in 2023-24, when the Lopes won 30 games, swept the WAC regular-season and tournament championships and earned the program's first NCAA Tournament victory with a first-round win against fifth-seeded Saint Mary's. GCU also produced its first WAC Player of the Year in Tyon Grant-Foster, earned its first two victories against AP Top 25 opponents and finished among the nation's top 50 in the NET rankings.
Shaw also helped guide GCU through its transition to the Mountain West in 2025-26. The Lopes tied for third place in their first season in the conference, becoming the most successful debuting team in MW history. GCU split with eventual conference champion Utah State and swept second-place San Diego State while finishing 13-7 in league play.
Across Shaw's tenure, GCU has developed into one of the West's most consistent postseason programs. The Lopes reached their first Division I NCAA Tournament in 2021, returned after becoming the lowest-seeded WAC Tournament champion in more than two decades in 2023 and followed with back-to-back tournament appearances in 2024 and 2025. GCU went 12-1 in WAC Tournament games during the Drew-Shaw era.
Before joining GCU, Shaw spent three seasons on Drew's staff at Vanderbilt, where his responsibilities included recruiting and post-player development. Shaw helped Vanderbilt sign the first McDonald's All-American in program history and assisted in bringing four other top-70 recruits to Nashville.
His coaching career followed 13 seasons as a professional player. The 6-foot-10 Shaw was selected by the Philadelphia 76ers in the second round of the 1998 NBA Draft and spent his rookie season with Philadelphia before continuing his career internationally in Italy and Spain.
Shaw was a four-year standout at Toledo, where he finished his career among the program's top five in blocked shots with 107 and rebounds with 871 while ranking in the top 10 with 1,562 points. He capped his collegiate career by earning Academic All-America honors as a senior.
Shaw's background as a professional player has been an asset in his work with GCU's frontcourt players and in helping student-athletes prepare for basketball beyond college.
Shaw also has had the opportunity to coach all three of his sons at GCU: Isaiah from 2021-24, Caleb beginning in 2023 and Luke beginning in 2025.
