Athletics Department Mission

The mission of the Grand Canyon University Athletics Department is to use intercollegiate sport as a platform in developing good Christian role models and in embodying the highest standards of excellence in the overall development of our student-athletes. We strive to educate and involve students and the university community in the promotion of personal growth. We prepare men and women to be student-athletes distinguished by integrity, academic and athletic excellence, and Christian conduct. We expect our student-athletes, coaches and staff to emulate Christ in all aspects of their lives including their academic and athletic endeavors.

Athletics Compliance Mission Statement

The mission of the Office of Athletics Compliance at Grand Canyon University is to assist and operate within the institutional compliance guidelines, direct, observe and validate compliance with all NCAA and conference requirements, and to educate athletics department staff members, student-athletes and the Grand Canyon University community regarding NCAA regulations. The Office of Athletics Compliance is committed and compelled to the principle of institutional control in the operation of the athletics department in a way that is consistent with the rules and regulations of the NCAA and our conferences.

Nicholas Ojea was named Grand Canyon's Senior Associate Athletic Director for Compliance and Administration on July 15, 2015. Ojea came to GCU from Rutgers where, since August of 2011, he served as Associate Athletic Director of Compliance. In that role, he provided oversight for the day-to-day NCAA compliance functions for 24 varsity sports as well as providing secondary reporting to the Office of Enterprise Risk Management, Ethics, and Compliance. ... Sherraine Pencil was named Grand Canyon’s Assistant Director of Compliance on Oct. 21, 2015. Pencil came to Grand Canyon from Michigan State where, since June 2012, she served as Assistant Compliance Coordinator.

Matt Reinsel was named Grand Canyon’s Assistant Director of Compliance in August of 2017. Reinsel came to GCU from St. Peter's University in Jersey City, NJ where he served as the Compliance Assistant and managed mulitple areas for their 19 NCAA D-I intercollegiate sports programs.

Alexa Wollach joined the Lopes Family as the Athletics Administration Coordinator on September 5, 2017. In her role, she will provide general support specifically in the areas in SWA duties (e.g. Sports Services), Student-Athlete Development, and Compliance.
