D. Matthew Maddox, D.O., FAOASM, FAOAO, MVP Orthopedics and Sports Medicine
An honors graduate of Northeast Missouri State, Dr. Maddox earned his Doctor of Osteopathy degree at Kirksville College of Osteopathic Medicine - A.T. Still University. His internship was with Sun Coast Hospital in Largo, Fla., followed by residency in orthopedic surgery at Parkview Hospital in Toledo, Ohio, and fellowship in orthopedic sports medicine at the Center for Sports Medicine and Orthopedics in Phoenix, Ariz.
Board certified by the American Osteopathic Academy of Orthopedics, Dr. Maddox is a Fellow with the American Osteopathic Academy of Orthopedics, as well as the American Osteopathic Academy of Sports Medicine. Dr. Maddox has hospital affiliations with John C. Lincoln Hospital-Deer Valley, Arrowhead Community Hospital, Scottsdale Healthcare-Shea, Metro Ambulatory Surgery, John C. Lincoln Hospital/John C. Lincoln Out Patient Surgical Center–Deer Valley, and Banner Thunderbird Hospital.
His professional experience has included private practice in orthopedic surgery in Toledo and in Phoenix, where he began practicing in 1992. Dr. Maddox has over 20 years of working with professional athletes including the National Hockey League (Phoenix Coyotes 1996-2005), Arena Football (Arizona Rattlers 1993-2001), and Major League Baseball (consulting team physician for the Seattle Mariners 1994-present). He also served many years and continues to serve as a team physician for GCU as well as Phoenix College, Northwest Christian High School, Mountain Ridge High School.
Joel Sellers, D.O., FAOASM
Dr. Joel Sellers, a native of Oklahoma, has been taking care of patients in the valley since 1987. He incorporates the philosophy of osteopathic medicine into his patient care, which considers “the body as a whole”. Dr. Sellers continues his love for sports medicine and maintains a long standing and thriving family care practice.
Many of his previous athletes and students continue as patients today. His patients range in age from 8 to 98, and he has many numerous multi-generational families, treating everything from the common cold to complex medical conditions. Dr. Sellers tries to maintain a patient centered, caring and spiritual philosophy.
He is a 1985 graduate of the Osteopathic College of Oklahoma State University and is Doctor of Osteopathy (D.O.) and is also a Fellow of the Osteopathic Academy of Sports Medicine (FAOASM) and board certified (family practice and sports medicine). He served an internship with Phoenix General Hospital and a sports medicine fellowship at the Center for Sports Medicine and Orthopedics.
Gordon Hart, PA-C, Certified Physician Assistant
Gordon Hart is in his second year with Grand Canyon’s sports medicine staff as the physician assistant for Dr. Maddox and OrthoArizona MVP Orthopedics and Sports Medicine.
In 2005 he completed his masters degree for physician assistant at A.T. Still University of Health Sciences. Prior to becoming a physician assistant, Gordon had a long career in professional hockey and served as the head athletic trainer for the National Hockey League’s Phoenix Coyotes (10 years) and the Winnipeg Jets (three years).
An avid sports enthusiast, Gordon was also an outstanding player in his own right. He was a member of the Canadian National Championship hockey team at the University of Calgary, where he was a scholar athlete.
