Grand Canyon women's basketball head coach
Winston Gandy announced the addition of Dominque Johnson to his staff as assistant coach.
A former professional player with coaching experience across the basketball landscape, Johnson joins GCU after serving last season as a video coordinator and player development coach with the G League San Diego Clipper, the affiliate to the Los Angeles Clippers.
Johnson's experience includes on-court player development as well as scouting. He was selected as one of 20 candidates for the NBA Coaching Development Program, where he completed scouts for the Cleveland Cavaliers, Miami Heat, Golden State Warriors and Denver Nuggets and was selected to coach at the 2025 Portsmouth Invitational Tournament.
He returned to his alma mater of Azusa Pacific and was a volunteer assistant on the men's basketball staff from 2023-25.
Prior to coaching, Johnson spent 10 seasons playing professionally in the International Basketball League in Poland, Italy, Turkey, German, China and Lebanon.
Johnson was also a training camp and summer league invitee with the Minnesota Timberwolves and Sacramento Kings in 2011-12, becoming the first Azua Pacific men's basketball player to earn an invitation. He was elected captain with the Texas Legends for two seasons from 2010-13 with the D-League (now G League).
Johnson, a Detroit native, was a standout player in college, playing two seasons at Southwest Tennessee Community College (2006-08) and two seasons at Azusa Pacific (2008-10). He was named the Region VII Junior College Player of the Year in 2009 and made the NAIA third team as a junior and NAIA first team as a senior. He helped Azusa Pacific to two Great Southwest Athletic Conference championships and averaged 17.2 points on 49% shooting as a senior for the NAIA runner-up.
