LINCOLN, Neb. – Grand Canyon senior pitcher
Taryn Batterton deserved a better fate Saturday for going toe to toe for four innings with arguably the best player in the nation, Nebraska's Jordy Frahm, on one of college softball's biggest stages.
Batterton and Frahm were pitching 1-hit shutouts entering the fifth inning, when the Cornhuskers offense broke through with a pair of two-out runs at the NCAA Lincoln Regional. That was more than enough for Frahm, who threw a 1-hit complete game with a career-high-tying 16 strikeouts and no walks to give No. 1 Nebraska a 2-0 win at its red-clad, sold-out Bowlin Stadium. Held to four hits, the Huskers notched their 23rd consecutive win despite posting their fewest runs since March 20.

The Lopes (53-9), who came from the elimination bracket to win the Mountain West Championship last weekend, will return for a Saturday night elimination game (5 p.m. in Lincoln, 3 p.m. in Phoenix) against the winner of the afternoon Louisville-South Dakota elimination game. No. 25 GCU defeated No. 24 Louisville 5-1 on the Lincoln Regional's opening day. With a night win, the Lopes would have to defeat Nebraska twice Sunday to advance to an NCAA Super Regional.
"It's everything you can dream of and even more," Frahm said. "It's an amazing environment, and it doesn't feel real, so we want to just keep going as long as we can."
Between defensive gems by freshman second baseman
Raegan Holtorf and sophomore third baseman
Ellie Pond and Batterton's pitching and fielding, GCU was in a scoreless tie through four innings at Nebraska after Batterton stranded a Husker runner on third with her first strikeout.
"You get into postseason and you get pitchers that are throwing well with great focus, delivering pitches," said Nebraska head coach Rhonda Revelle, whose name is on Bowlin Stadium's field. "You're going to ahve to grind it out and find ways to win.
"She (Frahm) was in good control, but that's also a really potent offense. You've seen their numbers."

GCU, 24th nationally in slugging percentage, had struck out twice in each of the first three innings and Frahm, the three-time All-American first-teamer, struck out the side in the foruth. That set up Nebraska (48-6) to break through in the scoring column in the fifth inning for the second consecutive day, both on RBI triples by center fielder Hannah Coor.
"That's God," Coor said.
Nebraska drew a leadoff walk, but Batterton nearly escaped a jam again until Coor's first-pitch swing put a line drive on the right-field line. The damage could have stayed at 1-0, but a potential inning-ending grounder scored a second run on redshirt freshman
Haley Wilkinson's throwing error.
Pond delivered GCU's only hit of the game with a leadoff single to center field in the third, but Frahm followed that by using her dominating riseball for a pair of three-pitch strikeouts and an inning-ending grounder. Frahm, also a leadoff batter who was last season's NFCA Player of the Year, retired 15 consecutive Lopes batters to end Nebraska's 15th shutout of the season.
Frahm (19-4 with 11 saves) struck out 16 batters for the first time since she was an Oklahoma freshman against Tennessee in 2022. It also matched a season high for GCU strikeouts, set against Arizona State ace Kenzie Brown. She struck out each Lopes batter and struck out Lopes senior center fielder
Sydney McCray, who reached base in every plate appearance Friday, in all three of her at bats Saturday.
"She's an aggressive hitter, and she wants to get on and she's going to fight, compete and she's not going to get cheated," Frahm said. "Every swing she took today was 100. Just knowing that from a pitcher's perspective, you have to spend good pitches."
Lopes junior
Maggie Place (2/3 of an inning) and freshman
Lilly Camp (1 1/3 innings) relieved for the final two shutout innings, but GCU could not rally with Frahm facing just two batters over the minimum. Nebraska, ranked 20th nationally in hitting, was kept to four hits by GCU pitchers.
Because of the quick turnaround for a second Saturday game, the NCAA did not require GCU to have a postgame press conference.
