Grand Canyon senior right-hander
Cam Cunnings was named Mountain West Pitcher of the Week on Monday after a scoreless relief week that helped the Lopes win a critical series against New Mexico.
Cunnings went 1-0 across two relief appearances, throwing 7 2/3 scoreless innings while allowing four hits and two walks. He struck out five, held New Mexico hitters to a .167 batting average and posted a 0.78 WHIP, the best mark among GCU pitchers who threw more than four innings during the week.
The honor is GCU's second Mountain West Pitcher of the Week award in its first season in the conference, joining
Chase Frey's selection earlier this spring.
Cunnings' week included three scoreless innings in the series opener, when GCU rallied late and won on
Cannon Peery's walk-off home run, and 4 2/3 scoreless innings in the finale.
"He's our guy out there and there's no one else we want in those situations," Peery said.
GCU interim head coach
Nathan Bannister said Cunnings' role was about holding momentum after the Lopes pulled closer late.
"I saw him attacking," Bannister said. "It looked like he was in the moment. Even though at the time we brought him in we were down one. You know Schmidtty hit one into Grove Pool. Cunnings kept the momentum on our side. That was a big thing about going to him. Even though we were down, we wanted the momentum to stay in our dugout. And he did a nice job."
Cunnings' longest outing of the week came in the finale, when he threw zeros through the late innings.
The award adds another conference weekly honor to GCU's debut Mountain West season and comes as the Lopes continue their late push in the conference race.
