Grand Canyon completed another undefeated weekend Sunday with a 2-1 win over Harvard, moving the Lopes to 10-0 for the first time in program history.
GCU topped last season's record 9-0 start with its pitching has led the way. The Lopes are allowing 1.5 runs per game with the pitching staff posting an ERA of 1.06, including four shutouts. The Lopes were just one strike away from their fifth shutout Sunday at GCU Softball Stadium, where Harvard's Alexa Wohr broke up winning pitcher
Oakley Vickers' shutout with a solo home run.
Before that long ball, the sophomore left-hander moved swiftly through the Crimson's lineup. She pitched the first 3 1/3 innings with five strikeouts before she was replaced mid-inning by sophomore right-hander
Natalie Fritz.
Fritz entered with one out in the fourth inning, immediately allowing a single and walk. Fritz worked out of the jam to hold the GCU lead. Vickers eventually re-entered and closed the game in the circle, finishing with 5 2/3 innings pitched, two hits allowed, eight strikeouts and the win. Vickers is 3-0 with a 1.45 ERA through the first 10 games.
The GCU batters worked through struggles with their ability to manufacture runs through baserunning, small ball and a little bit of luck.
In the bottom of the first inning, leadoff batter
Sydney McCray worked a walk and stole second on the next pitch. After freshman second basemanÂ
Raegan Holtorf's sacrifice bunt moved her to third, sophomore first baseman
Jada Cooper came to the plate.
Cooper battled, fouling off seven pitches before blooping an RBI single to right-center field on the at bat's 11th pitch. Cooper added a nine-pitch walk in the third inning and another single in the fifth. Despite no home runs to her name, Cooper has remained a steady presence at the plate with a batting average of .435 and an on-base percentage of .567.
The Lopes scored again in the fifth, when junior pinch-hitter
Alina Satcher blooped a ball in the infield that managed to drop.
Grand Canyon's ability to replicate Week 1's 5-0 weekend will be important moving forward. The Lopes were ranked as the No. 27 team in the nation before the week began, paving the way for the possibility of the Lopes earning a top-25 ranking this week.
GCU returns to GCU Softball Stadium on Thursday night when the Lopes host San Diego before another five-game weekend in the Purple Classic.
