Lopes set to debut in new conference with a competitive slate
Grand Canyon revealed this year's cross country schedule for its first season in the Mountain West.
Â
Head coach Shayla Houlihan is ready for her second year at the helm for the Lopes and to see what the new competition holds.
Â
"We're excited to build on the momentum from the last year and take another big step forward this fall," Houlihan said.
Â
GCU starts off the regular season by staying in state for the George Kyte Classic in Flagstaff on Aug. 30. The Lopes will then take a trip to Fullerton, California, to compete in the Biola Invitational for the first time on Sept. 12.
Â
With new additions to the roster, GCU is ready to take on new competition.
Â
"With the roster additions we have made in combination with the current athletes, I think we can compete at an even higher level," Houlihan said. "I am excited to keep building and challenging these young people to achieve the big goals we have set for ourselves."
Â
The Lopes return to Arizona before heading to the Dave Murray Invitational on Sept. 17 at Tucson Country Club. After a one-month break from competition, GCU will make its way back west to the UCR Invitational in Riverside, California, on Oct. 18.Â
Â
Grand Canyon then moves out of the regular season and into the Mountain West Championships in Fresno, California, on Oct. 31. Houlihan makes it clear that there will be great competition in this new era.
Â
"We're moving into one of the most competitive distance conferences in the nation," Houlihan said. "The athletes have trained with that focus and rigor all summer."
Â
Two weeks later, the NCAA West Regionals will be held in Sacramento, California, hosted by Sacramento State.
