Lopes tighten game in 5th; Wildcats end with 6 unanswered
TUCSON, Ariz. — Grand Canyon's four-game winning streak against Arizona was snapped on Tuesday night with a 14-4 Wildcats victory at Hi Corbett Field.
GCU (22-14) faced an early 6-1 deficit but posted a three-run fifth inning to narrow the gap to 6-4 against No. 22 Arizona (26-10). The Wildcats scored eight unanswered runs to end the game in seven innings.
Entering Tuesday, the Lopes had tallied four straight wins against Arizona. GCU beat the Wildcats in the final two regular-season meetings of 2024 before winning the opener of the Tucson Regional in the NCAA tournament over Arizona. The Lopes also defeated Arizona on April 1 back in Phoenix before falling on Tuesday night.
GCU was led offensively by senior third baseman Eli Paton, who delivered a two-run single in the fifth inning. Sophomore first baseman Cannon Peery doubled and walked, while junior shortstop Emilio Barreras reached base twice and scored a run.
In the Lopes' highlight offensive inning, the three-run fifth, Barreras' RBI single was followed by Paton's two-run single.
After junior lefty Chance Key tossed a scoreless first inning, Arizona followed by scoring in the game's final six innings to gradually pull away.
GCU used five pitchers to navigate the seven innings.
The Lopes return to WAC play with a Thursday-Friday-Saturday series at Utah Tech.
