Grand Canyon won its 20th game of the season Sunday morning with a 3-1 victory over UNLV at GCU Softball Stadium. The win capped off a 4-0 Purple Classic for GCU, giving the Lopes eight straight wins.
GCU (20-3) took down UNLV (15-9) behind a strong pitching staff performance, using three pitchers for a two-hitter.
Lopes freshman
Oakley Vickers earned her first collegiate victory, pitching the fourth through sixth innings. Vickers struck out six batters, all swinging, in her longest appearance of the season.
GCU senior
Meghan Golden started in the circle, throwing three shutout frames and allowing just one hit while striking out three. There is reason to monitor Golden's scoreless streak, as she is yet to allow a run in 31 consecutive innings. The streak dates back to the GCU loss to Wichita State on Feb. 7.
The Lopes scored two in the first inning and never lost their lead. The inning began as many first innings have for GCU: sophomore second baseman
Savannah Kirk singled and stole second. Kirk extended her hitting streak to 13. as she has a hit in every game except a loss to Oregon.Â
Lopes junior outfielder
Sydney McCray walked thereafter, and advanced a base with Kirk on a passed ball. Ground ball RBIs from freshman first baseman
Jada Cooper and sophomore pinch-hitter
Alina Satcher gave the Lopes a 2-0 lead.
Kirk, Cooper and junior third baseman
Emily Gonzalez all entered the game with multi-hit streaks of three apiece. While each of those streaks came to an end, each player recorded a hit on the day.
GCU added its third run in the third inning, when Satcher scorched a ball at second base, causing a fielding error and scoring sophomore
Haley Wolsky from second base. Wolsky pinch ran for Gonzalez after her single and stole second to put herself in position to score.
Lopes junior
Taryn Batterton took over in the seventh inning after Vickers allowed an inning-opening home run. Batterton went 1-2-3 and earned her first save of the season.
Looking big picture, GCU projects to receive more votes in every national poll after a 4-0 weekend. Sitting as the first team out in the National Fastpitch Coaches Association poll, the Lopes may be able to crack the top 25 this week.
GCU heads on the road after the first five weekends all resided at home. The Lopes will start the WAC season at Utah Valley next weekend.
