Grand Canyon used a decisive 10-run eighth inning to turn a tight game into a 12-5 blowout over Texas Tech in Friday night's series opener at GCU Ballpark.
The damage done in the bottom of the eighth was substantial. The half-inning started at 8:21 p.m. with a 2-2 tie and ended over 35 minutes later with the Lopes (9-4) holding a 12-2 advantage.
GCU sent 14 batters to the plate, logged seven base hits, scored 10 runs, faced three different Red Raiders pitchers, saw 56 pitches and had a string of 12 consecutive batters reach base.
After outfielders
Eddy Pelc and
Michael Diaz checked in with one-out hits, sophomore designated hitter
Cannon Peery gave the Lopes their first lead on a well executed safety squeeze bunt up the first base line to narrowly score Pelc on a close play at the plate. Sophomore second baseman
Troy Sanders recorded the game's signature hit, a bases-clearing triple to extend the lead to 6-2 and send Texas Tech (3-9) deeper into its bullpen.
Things spiraled from there. An error on a dropped third strike prevented a second out from being recorded and ignited a string of hits, walks and hit batters. Junior shortstop
Emilio Barreras, junior first baseman
Zach Yorke and Peery all knocked in runs on base hits.
The eighth inning started with a GCU strikeout and ended with a double play. But between those two bookends, 12 consecutive batters reached.
Sophomore right-hander
Connor Mattison picked up his first win of the season for his four innings of relief work. He did not allow a run in his first three innings but surrendered three runs in the top of the ninth after the 35-minute wait between the eighth and ninth innings.
Mattison backed junior right-hander
Isaac Lyon's start of five innings, two runs and five strikeouts.
Texas Tech struck first in the game with single tallies in the second and fifth innings.
GCU broke its scoreless drought with a two-run sixth inning to tie. Barreras led off the sixth with a double and scored GCU's first run on a Yorke double. Sophomore catcher
Marcus Galvan drew a bases-loaded walk to bring the Lopes even at 2-2.
Yorke, Barreras and Pelc all logged multi-hit games.
Dating back to 2015, GCU has won five of its last seven games against Texas Tech.
The Lopes will send sophomore righty
Garrett Ahern to the hill to attempt a series-clinching win on Saturday at 6 p.m.
