Kirk, Batterton each receive award for 2nd time this season
Grand Canyon sophomore second baseman Savannah Kirk and junior right-hander Taryn Batterton took home WAC Player and Pitcher of the Week for their efforts in Week 8 of the season.
Kirk and Batterton each won their second awards this year.
Kirk, the WAC Preseason Player of the Year, dazzled again this week with 10 hits in the Lopes' four wins. Kirk notched six runs and six RBIs while getting multiple hits in each of the week's four wins.
Kirk added four stolen bases on the week, extending her national lead for stolen bases without being caught to 29. The native of Waddell, Arizona, raised her batting average to .518, going 10 for 14 on the week.Â
Kirk ranks fourth in the nation in hits and batting average, while ranking sixth nationally for stolen bases.
Batterton racked up 12 innings pitched over her three appearances on the week. She just allowed one run, earning her 10th and WAC-leading 11th wins of the season. Batterton was one out away from a no-hitter in the series opener at California Baptist, throwing GCU's first seven-inning complete game of the season.
Batterton, who is from Latta, Oklahoma, lowered her ERA to 1.93, which ranks third in the WAC this season.Â
Kirk, Batterton and the Lopes return to action this weekend when they host Southern Utah for a three-game set at GCU Softball Stadium.
