Grand Canyon took to the field for the third straight night and took down Montana 3-1 on Saturday night at GCU Softball Stadium.
The first collegiate start by GCU freshman
Oakley Vickers, junior teammate
Sydney McCray's two-hit performance and another
Taryn Batterton shutout pitching performance highlighted the Lopes fourth victory in five games.
Vickers went 2 1/3 innings, just allowing a run in the first inning via three Grizzlies base hits. Batterton took the circle the rest of the way, building on her Friday night no-hitter. Batterton pitched 4 2/3 innings of shutout softball, allowing three hits and striking out four. The junior right-hander has opened her 2025 campaign with 9 2/3 innings of shutout ball.
The Lopes answered the Montana run in the top of the first immediately, with sophomore second baseman
Savannah Kirk's single and steal, followed by graduate left fielder
Mia Weckel's RBI double that one-hopped the wall in right field.
Kirk earned her 10th hit through five games, moving her batting average to .588. She also has six stolen bases.
GCU snagged its other two runs in the bottom of the second inning, when sophomore shortstop
Mackenzie Nolan led off with a single and a stolen base. She eventually scored off a sacrfice fly by sophomore catcher
Tinley Lucas.
With two outs in the second, McCray singled up the middle, bringing up Kirk for a bloop single into short left field. The Grizzlies shortstop and left fielder converged on the ball for a collision that jarred the ball loose to allow the speedy McCray to score from first base.
No runs were scored in the final five innings, leaving the Lopes with a 3-1 win to move Batterton to 2-0 after the first three days of the season.
The Lopes and Grizzlies will go at it again to close out the 13-game GCU Kickoff Classic with a 11:30 a.m. Sunday morning game, which will stream on ESPN+.
