Mattison wins honor for Vandy shutout work

Lopes sophomore threw 5 scoreless innings in relief in front of over 5,000 on Opening Day
Grand Canyon sophomore right-hander Connor Mattison was named the WAC Pitcher of the Week for his relief outing on Opening Day.
Mattison spun five scoreless innings and racked up six strikeouts out of the Lopes' bullpen in a narrow 4-3 defeat to No. 16 Vanderbilt in front of 5,294 fans.
"The juices were definitely flowing, and I couldn't ask for a better place to be," Mattison said after Friday's outing. "I absolutely love it here, I love the fans and I love this team.
"My worst is always my first inning, and once I get rolling, I think I'm pretty hard to stop."
Mattison allowed several deep fly balls in his first inning of work, had a failed pickoff attempt and hit a batter. He still was able to keep Vanderbilt scoreless in the frame. And then it was smooth sailing.
Mattison struck out two batters in the sixth, his second inning of relief work. He then retired nine of the 10 batters that he faced in the game's final three innings.
The Lopes fell 4-3 but were able to pursue a comeback due to Mattison's relief efforts.
Mattison earns the honor for the second time in his career. He was named WAC Pitcher of the Week after tossing a no-hitter against Sacramento State last season.
