STEPHENVILLE, Texas – Grand Canyon pulled within a game of the WAC lead Thursday night by holding off Tarleton State for a 64-60 victory that was the Texans' first home loss since Nov. 9.
GCU (18-6, 8-2 WAC) overcame its second consecutive 22-turnover game, the most the Lopes have made in a regulation game since January 2017. The Texans led for 14 seconds at 7-6 and never again, but the Lopes lost a 10-point, second-half lead to wind up tied with 6:30 to go at Wisdom Gym. GCU shut out Tarleton State for nearly five minutes to keep the lead and set up its winning finish.
GCU junior center
Duke Brennan recorded his seventh double-double with 12 points and 14 rebounds and did not miss a field goal or a free throw in 34 minutes. The Lopes put four scorers in double figures on a 49% shooting night from the field, including 18-of-29 shooting (62%) from 2-point range.
Utah Valley (17-7, 9-1 WAC) was idle Thursday night, allowing GCU to close the gap to a game after the teams split their regular-season series.
Key player

GCU graduate swingman
Tyon Grant-Foster led the team in scoring with 19 points on 6-of-10 shooting from the field and 7-of-8 accuracy on free throws.
Grant-Foster, starting for the first time since Jan. 9 at Utah Valley, added eight rebounds, three assists, two steals and two blocked shots.
However, the 6-foot-7 star also committed seven turnovers, which tied his career high that he had set in a loss this season against UC Davis.
Key moment
The Lopes were leading 61-60 with the ball in the final minute when Grant-Foster hit senior power forward
JaKobe Coles cutting into the lane from the weak side. Coles converted the layup for a 63-60 lead with 40 seconds to go that held up when Tarleton State's Bubu Benjamin missed a 3-pointer.
Key statistic
GCU lost Saturday's game at California Baptist when it made 12 of 23 from throws and the Lancers made 23 of 28 for an 11-point advantage. On Thursday night at Tarleton State, the Lopes went 22 for 28 at the free throw like while the Texans went 8 for 15 at the charity stripe.
Quotable
Lopes head coach
Bryce Drew: "Twenty-two turnovers. Their pressure definitely had something to do with it. Some of it is fundamental basketball. Dribble. Pick it up with two hands. Pass it to the open teammate and catch it with two hands. It's really that simple. Thanks for the Lord we were able to overcome 22 turnovers on the road, which is pretty much near impossible to do. But I'm really thankful for the win. Tyon made some great plays. His two baskets down the stretch and his assist to JaKobe were bigtime plays by a bigtime player."
What's next?
GCU plays at UT Arlington on Saturday at 1 p.m. (Phoenix time). The Mavericks defeated (12-13, 5-6 WAC) moved to 8-2 at home Thursday night when they rallied from a 17-point deficit to defeat California Baptist 82-79 in overtime.
